Holme-next-the-Sea Parish Council

The Parish Council is the first tier of local government. Councillors are elected every four years, the last election having taken place (uncontested) on 5th May 2011. The Parish Council comprises seven elected members of the village. The present councillors are David Myles (Chairman), Kevin Felgate (Vice Chairman), Robert Burton, Peter Cheadle, Roger Davey, Gillian Morley and Geoffrey Needham.

Our main aim is to represent the interests of parishioners at grass roots level. Details of our main areas of responsibility can be found on the Main Activities of Holme-next-the-Sea Parish Council page.

All councillors are independent and unpaid, but the Clerk (who deals with all correspondence, prepares meeting agendas and takes minutes, collects rents, writes letters on our behalf and keeps our financial records) receives a salary for five hours work per week. Parishioners are encouraged to communicate with the Parish Council, bringing matters of concern to our attention. All communications should be addressed to our Clerk, Glynis Allen, at clerk@holme-next-the-sea.co.uk

Holme-next-the-Sea Village Hall - Photo Tony Foster The Parish Council meets monthly, usually 2nd Tuesday of the month except in August, when there is no meeting. Meetings are held at 7.30 p.m. in the village hall. Agendas are displayed on the notice boards at the junction of Kirkgate and Peddars Way, the bus shelter on Main Road and in the porch of the church. We support the Link magazine and usually publish a précis of the meetings as a way of keeping parishioners in touch with current issues.

Parish Council meetings are open to members of the public and press, who are welcome to come and observe. At each meeting, there is an open session, lasting no more than fifteen minutes, at which point parishioners may address the Council on any relevant matter of interest to them.

Parishioners are also welcome to attend the Annual Parish Meeting, held each May also in the village hall, at which the Council reports on its work over the previous twelve months and its priorities for the coming year. Groups and individuals who play a role in the life of the community are also invited to attend. These include the police, our District Councillor and representatives from different village organisations. This meeting gives parishioners an opportunity to air their views on current issues.

To undertake our work effectively, we work closely with other councils, primarily those representing the borough and county. For example, we are consulted by the Borough Council of King's Lynn and West Norfolk with regard to planning applications and on matters concerning the highway, we liaise with Norfolk County Council. (Our interests in the Borough are represented by Cllr. Elizabeth Watson and Cllr. Paul Beal; at County level by Cllr. Stephen Betts and the MP for our area is Henry Bellingham.)
